What is hypnotherapy*?

Hypnotherapy is the term used to describe the use of hypnosis

in a therapeutic context – with the intention to solve problems

or improve conditions of the mind or body.

Many hypnotherapists refer to their work as “clinical hypnosis.”

Hypnosis is a natural state that we all enter a few times each day.

It is simply a matter of setting aside the conscious mind,

to one degree or another, and selectively focusing one’s attention

on either a particular point or a whole range of experiences.

The greatest revolution of our generation

is the discovery that human beings,

by changing the inner attitudes of their minds,

Hypnotherapy and Weight Reduction**

More than a decade of controlled scientific studies and analytical reviews show that hypnotherapy, in conjunction with proper exercise and nutrition, can enhance weight reduction and help keep the weight off longer.  A review of studies published in leading medical journals between 1985 and 1998 offers compelling evidence that hypnotherapy is the added ingredient that helps people stay on track with weight control.

Here’s what the studies found:

Hypnotherapy is effective in weight reduction when used in conjunction with behavioral therapy.

In studies comparing a control group to a hypnotherapy group, the group exposed to hypnotherapy lost more weight and kept the weight off longer.

Hypnotherapy helped people correct faulty thinking and associations around food and helped them get control over non-hunger-related eating.

Frequently asked questions about hypnosis*

Is a person who is hypnotized still in control?

Absolutely and at all times.  Comedic stage hypnotists often contribute to the "mind-control" misconception by having volunteers do all kinds of outlandish things.  But even while hypnotized during the show, they do still have a choice and may refuse to comply with the hypnotist's suggestion.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Yes.  In theory, everyone can be hypnotized because everyone has the capacity to relax and to concentrate.  There may be a few exceptions, such as drunk/drugged people or perhaps those whose mental deficits prevent concentration or relaxation.  However, some people will not be hypnotized by personal choice.  Some will never overcome their fear of what they think hypnosis is and may be too guarded to respond.  But overall, most can easily be hypnotized.

Can a person be stuck in hypnosis?

No.  It is  simply not possible; hypnosis does not last forever.  If the hypnotherapist quits speaking (or if the power goes out while listening to a hypnosis CD) a person would simply choose to either wake-up, or fall into a natural sleep and take a nap.

Is hypnosis the same as sleep?

No.  Hypnosis is generally a profound state of relaxation, but it is different from sleep.  A sleeping person cannot usually respond to suggestion.
